GUIDELINES

  • Each accepted student will receive five master classes with five world-class artists and pedagogues.
  • Tailored panel discussions with high-profile guest speakers on career management.
  • Daily recitals performed by world-class artists.
  • Concert opportunities during the 2019 PYPA.
  • Automatic acceptance into the 2019 Philadelphia International Piano Competition where winners receive cash prizes, ongoing concert engagements in solo recitals and with orchestras, and a full scholarship to attend the 2020 PYPA.
  • Designated practice rooms with grand pianos throughout the 2019 PYPA.
  • Opportunities to make lifetime friendships with young artists from around the world.

  • Applicants must be born after August 3, 1993.
  • PYPA will accept up to 20 active participants. Applicants who are not accepted as active participants will automatically be accepted as observers.
  • Repertoire: two contrasting works, including one that shows virtuosity.
  • Active participants and observers are responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodations in Philadelphia. PYPA will not arrange for or book hotel accommodations for anyone including artists, parents, and observers. We suggest Club Quarters, however, as a potential hotel.

  • 2019 Application: USD$150
  • 2019 Active participants’ fee: USD$3,250 (includes all concerts, five masterclasses, practice room fee and participation in Philadelphia International Piano Competition)
  • 2019 Observers fee: USD$925 (Includes all concerts, lectures and masterclasses)
  • Parents or legal guardians of participants who are 16 or 17 years old at the time of PYPA are not required to attend PYPA. If they do not attend, they must submit a signed consent form, as noted above. If they attend, they must pay an additional discounted fee for accompanying family member of $725 (per person), as noted above.
  • Parents or legal guardians of participants who are 18 years old or older are not required to attend PYPA. If they attend, they must pay an additional discounted fee for accompanying family member of $725 (per person), as noted above.
  • Parents or legal guardians of participants 15 years or younger at the time of PYPA must attend PYPA. PYPA offers a discounted fee for accompanying family member of $725 (per person), which includes concert tickets to all events, and observation of all masterclasses.

  • The application form needs to be filled out online, except for the audition recording.
  • You must pay the $150.00 USD application fee online.

  • For your audition repertoire, we suggest two contrasting works that showcase your best abilities.

ELIGIBILITY AND REGULATIONS

  • The 2019 Philadelphia International Piano Competition is only open to all 2019 PYPA young artists.
  • The competition will be divided into two categories:
    • Senior Division: Born on and before August 2, 2001, to August 3, 1993.
    • Junior Division: Born on and after August 1, 2001.
  • PYPA will arrange an accompanist for the participants to perform. Participants must compensate for the accompanist.
  • PYPA participants can choose not to participate in the competition.
  • All performances must be from memory.
  • Except for the PYPA Scholarship Award, the PYPA artistic director and 2019 PYPA faculty will not judge in the competition.
  • All winners are required to perform in the winners’ concert on August 11, 2019 at Academy of Vocal Arts.
  • All judges’ decisions are final.

  • Winner of Junior Division: $1,000

AWARDS AND ENGAGEMENTS

Perry and Gladys Rosenstein Recital Award

Solo recital at Puffin Cultural Forum (Teaneck, NJ) during 2019-2020 season (Will be awarded to only one participant from both categories who performs the best solo repertoire performance during the competition, as determined by the judges.)

PYPA Scholarship Award

Full scholarship to attend the 2020 PYPA (scholarship award in the amount of $3,250, as of 2019 PYPA) (To be chosen by the Artistic Director of PYPA from the finalists.)

Winners’ Concert

All prizewinners will perform in the 2019 PYPA closing concert on August 11, 2019 at AVA. Additional concert engagements will be added throughout the season at the discretion of the Artistic Director of PYPA.

THE DEADLINE FOR PARTICIPATION CONFIRMATION LETTER AND TUITION PAYMENT

*If an active participant or observer wishes to cancel before June 15, 2019, the active participant or observer must send a signed letter and PYPA will refund 50% of any tuition fees. If, however, cancellation is due to an inability to obtain a visa, the amount of refund is subject to approval by PYPA executive directors.
*If an active participant or observer wishes to cancel after June 15, 2019, PYPA will not refund any paid application or tuition fees unless the cancellation is a result of an Act of God or force majeure.
